Cost savings for maintenance measures thanks to up-to-date condition data in Herne

AI-supported road maintenance: Herne relies on smart technology
Potholes are a nuisance for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians – and eliminating them is a constant challenge for cities. Herne is now taking an innovative approach: together with the company EDGITAL, the city is using smart technology that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to record the condition of the roads and detect damage at an early stage. Cameras are installed in four vehicles – including refuse collection vehicles from Entsorgung Herne and an electric van from SEG. As the vehicles drive through the city, they record images that are analyzed by the AI. Engineers then receive specific recommendations for action so that maintenance measures can be planned in a targeted manner.
Less damage, longer service life, lower costs
The technology has been in use in Herne since the beginning of 2024. The AI not only assesses the current condition of the roads, but also creates condition forecasts by taking weather data, traffic load and other factors into account. This means that potholes can be repaired before they even occur, which extends the service life of the roads and saves costs in the long term. The NRW Ministry of Regional Identity, Communities and Local Government, Building and Digitalization is funding the project with 500,000 euros. Lord Mayor Dr. Frank Dudda emphasizes the importance of this innovation for the city: “With the technical road condition survey, we are making the infrastructure fit for the future. AI will help us do this.”
